SEND

At Pensilva School, we believe every child is unique and deserves an education that enables them to thrive socially, emotionally and academically. We are an inclusive school, welcoming children of all abilities and committed to meeting the needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

Our Commitment

We are guided by our school values, to live, to love, to learn, and our shared motto: “Working together to make a difference.” Our approach ensures that all children receive high-quality teaching and a curriculum that inspires, challenges and supports them to achieve their potential.

Inclusive Practice

Most children’s needs are met through Quality First Teaching (Wave 1) which is inclusive, high-quality teaching that is appropriately adapted for learners.

Some pupils may benefit from Targeted Adaptations (Wave 2) made up of additional support and adjustments to accelerate learning. These interventions are part of our differentiated curriculum and do not necessarily indicate SEND.

Where a pupil requires support that is additional to or different from the differentiated curriculum due to identified SEND, they will be placed on our SEND Record of Need following consultation with parents.

Supporting Diverse Needs

We recognise a wide range of needs, including:

  • Difficulties with reading, writing or mathematics
  • Emotional or behavioural challenges
  • Speech, language, visual, hearing or mobility issues
  • Learning difficulties or specific learning differences (e.g. dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia)
  • Exceptional gifts or talents

Our staff are trained to identify and respond to these needs, using strategies across the four broad areas of SEND:

  1. Communication and Interaction
  2. Cognition and Learning
  3. Social, Emotional and Mental Health
  4. Sensory and/or Physical Needs

Empowering Teachers

Teachers are best placed to understand their pupils. We provide a framework to help staff confidently identify barriers to learning and implement effective strategies. These adaptations are not add-ons but are essential tools for equity and inclusion.
